Doris Magico, Back to the Wall (Qinghai Lake, China, 11 min 11, 2017) is a series of video performances created at the rhythm of one a day during a five-week trip to China. Taking the Great Wall as a starting point, the artist travels alone by foot through the Chinese lands to the Gobi Desert, crossing the Qinghai, the country’s largest salt lake and a major place of pilgrimage. The insignificance of a woman going through the immensity of China endows this walking journey a meaning beyond imagination. It is at once a movement of the body, an artistic and political act that is enlightened by a contemplative walk, which privileges slowness above the speed and efficacy imperatives of our everyday lives.
