Simon Morley, The Classless Society

The Classless Society (2016, 2 min 25). In this work, a series of biomorphic animations follow each other in steady sequence. At first, they seem to be purely abstract designs, but then it becomes evident that each one eventually forms a face, which can be briefly seen in entirety as an after-image as the animation disappears and is replaced by another. The faces are communist dictators and ideologues, including Stalin, Lenin, Mao, Castro, Rosa Luxemburg, Trotsky. The last one is Kim Il Sung. The title alludes to the goals of the communist party, and to the true ‘classlessness’ of the void towards which each head in the video inevitably moves. The ‘distressed’ quality of the work is intended to give it a historical aura.
